Finding and Buying Yarn in Bangkok

I had a great question from a reader in one of my previous posts about where to find yarn in Bangkok.  I'm slightly ashamed to say that I haven't actually bought yarn here yet!  We’ve been here about a year and this is my experience with yarn in Bangkok: It’s either crazy expensive for decent quality or it’s moderately priced for cheap quality.

So I either bring yarn back with me after visiting family in the States or order it online.

BUT, if you must shop in Bangkok, here’s what I found (if I don't provide a link, it's because the store can be found easily in a google search as long as you also put in "Bangkok" in the search):

(Continues after the page break)

Personal experience:
Siam Paragon Department Store – a full variety of yarn types from acrylic to wool to cotton, etc.  I’m “cheap” so they are overpriced for my liking.  But they did seem like good quality/textured yarns.
Central Chidlom – again, like Paragon Department Store – a good variety and good quality – also expensive.
Knit ‘n’ Us – they source their own name brand yarn.  It’s quality but also expensive.
Trinity Mall Shopping Complex – I found one shop the other day.  It seemed to have acrylic and wool but I didn’t check prices. http://www.bangkokpost.com/lifestyle/3357_info_trinity-mall.html
PINN Shop (Chiang Mai, but they also have shops in Bangkok) – I’ve seen American brands of yarn there among other brands – all varieties but about twice as much as what I pay for it in the States or online.  http://www.pinn-stitch.com/aboutus.asp

Other resources (I take no credit for these peoples’ research):
Big Knit Café – I’ve heard the yarn is great (quality and variety) but also expensive.
Zawa Knitting – Seems to be Big Knit Café’s primary competitor in the same neighborhood.

B2S – found in most Central Shopping Malls
Chatuchak Weekend Market – I personally have not seen yarn at Chatuchak, but the place is HUGE so I don’t doubt that there is yarn there somewhere! However, I would also bet that the quality is poor. So buy at your own risk.
Central World Plaza – I’ve been through this mall on several occasions and have not seen yarn there (I’ve not looked for yarn there), but I don’t doubt that there would be a shop for it somewhere.
MBK – again, I haven’t seen yarn here, but it’s like a smaller, air-conditioned version of Chatuchak and no doubt probably has yarn somewhere.

Tang Hua Seng – Never been, and first I’ve heard of it in my own search
Sampeng Alley – I SO WANT TO GO HERE! But for fabric (and yarn, I guess).  Here’s another link to useful information about Sampeng Alley: http://bkkquilt.com/sampeng/
Owl Crafts – I’ve heard of this, but haven’t had a chance to go.

Any other yarn shops/markets out there?  I'd love to know what you find and if you can find quality yarn at cheap prices.  I mean - I'm really cheap.  I usually crochet with Red Heart and Caron (which I bought on sale!). Anyway, I hope these links and resources help you in your search!

  1. I've bought a lot of yarn and other accessories from Tang Hua Seng - it's great for cheaper yarn in many colour variations, especially acrylics which I tend to use for toys.
I've just discovered a couple of websites you can order yarn from cheaply and the yarn I got was nice quality - e.g. Bamboo cotton. But they don't always have a wide range of colours and it's tricky using google translate - better if you have a Thai friend to help you if you don't read/speak Thai

  2. Si Racha is not Bangkok, obviously - but if you happen to be down there (or you want to buy online), the people and cute dog at Ohopshop sell lovely cotton crochet yarns and crocheted products. They also run classes in their gorgeous wee shop. I have a fantastic granny square bag I got there several years ago. See http://www.ohopshop.com/a/

  3. Dear Carrie,
I run a women's empowerment group for women who are highly vulnerable. The chosen activity for our group is to learn to crochet! Currently the skills range from beginner to advanced, but most could use more skills training. We are looking for a volunteer who might want to come and teach the group once or twice. Just enough to give the ladies some new skills to work on. Do you think you might be interested? Or do you know someone who might be?
    Please let me know!
    Thanks so much!

  10. I just went to Tang Hua Seng this week and it is a GREAT place with reasonable prices. I was looking for yarn & they have a wide variety of colours and quality, some as low as 20 baht and others above 100 baht. There is also lots of other supplies: fabric, ribbon, buttons, thread, string, felt, beads, lace, pipe cleaners, and much more.

The only downside is that it is a bit far from central Bangkok and the BTS/MRT, but once you get all the way out there, it’s worth it!
